Description

The Cuba Libre: More Than Just a Rum and Coke

The Cuba Libre is the ultimate three-ingredient cocktail for beginners. While often mistaken for a simple Rum and Coke, the "Free Cuba" is defined by its bright hit of fresh lime, which cuts through the sweetness of the cola to create a perfectly balanced, refreshing highball.

A taste of history

Born in Havana around 1900, the drink's name celebrated the end of the Spanish-American War. Legend has it that a U.S. Army Signal Corps captain toasted "¡Por Cuba Libre!" (To a Free Cuba!) while mixing Bacardi rum with the newly imported Coca-Cola and a squeeze of local lime. It has been a global bar staple ever since.

Preparation Steps

Squeeze & Drop: Squeeze the juice from two lime wedges into a chilled highball glass. Drop the spent wedges into the glass—the oils in the peel add essential aroma.

Add Rum: Pour your white rum over the lime.

Ice it up: Fill the glass to the brim with large ice cubes.

The Fizz: Top with cold Coca-Cola.

The Stir: Give it one gentle stir with a long spoon to combine without losing the carbonation.
